Fairleigh Dickinson University

Fairleigh Dickinson University is a nonsectarian, independent institution of higher learning with two main campuses in northern New Jersey. The Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck emphasizes a professional, career-oriented education. The College at Florham, in Madison, offers a more traditional liberal arts education. The university also has campuses in Wroxton, in Oxfordshire, England; and Vancouver, in British Columbia, Canada.

The American educator Peter Sammartino and his wife, Sylvia, founded Fairleigh Dickinson Junior College in Rutherford, New Jersey, in 1942. They named the school for Fairleigh S. Dickinson, a manufacturer of surgical equipment who was an early benefactor. The institution became a four-year college in 1948 and a university in 1956. By 1958, the university had opened its campuses at Madison and Teaneck. The university’s athletic teams at the Florham campus are called the Devils. At the Metropolitan campus, sporting teams are called the Knights. The university’s website at https://www.fdu.edu/ offers additional information.
