Gonzaga University

Gonzaga University is a private, Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in Spokane, Washington. The university is affiliated with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Joseph Cataldo, a Jesuit priest, founded the institution, then called Gonzaga College, in 1887 as a boarding school for boys. The school is named for Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, the patron saint of youth. It adopted its present name in 1912 when it became a university. Gonzaga first admitted women in 1948. Well-known graduates of Gonzaga include entertainer Bing Crosby and professional basketball player John Stockton.
