Hofstra University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Hempstead, New York. It was created from the estate of the Dutch American lumber company owner William S. Hofstra and his wife, Kate Mason Hofstra, and named for them. When the institution opened in 1935, it was called New York University Nassau College-Hofstra Memorial. The name was changed to Hofstra College in 1937, and the college separated from New York University in 1939. The college became Hofstra University in 1963.
Hofstra University was founded as a coeducational commuter college for local students, offering both day and evening classes. Today, residence halls house many of the university’s full-time undergraduate students, some from outside the area. The men’s athletic teams at Hofstra University are called the Flying Dutchmen, and the women’s teams are the Flying Dutchwomen.
