Louisiana Tech University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Ruston, Louisiana. The university was founded as the Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana in 1894. Classes began in 1895. In 1921, the school changed its name to Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. It adopted its present name in 1971. The university is part of the University of Louisiana System.
The university’s Division of Continuing Education offers noncredit courses for professional training and personal development. Degree programs for military personnel are given at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. Louisiana Tech University operates a summer program called Tech Rome in Rome, Italy.
The men’s athletic teams are called the Bulldogs, and the women’s teams are called the Lady Techsters. Well-known graduates include football player Terry Bradshaw. Basketball star Karl Malone played at Louisiana Tech for three seasons before turning professional after his junior year.
