Memphis, University of, is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Memphis. The state of Tennessee founded the school as West Tennessee State Normal School in 1912. The institution became a college in 1929 and a university in 1957. The university adopted its present name in 1994. The University of Memphis is part of the Tennessee Board of Regents System. The university’s athletic teams are called the Memphis Tigers.
