Michigan Technological University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Houghton, Michigan. The state founded the university as the Michigan Mining School in 1885. The school’s mission was to train mining engineers. The school’s name changed to Michigan College of Mines and later to Michigan College of Mining and Technology. It adopted its present name in 1964. Michigan Technological University, often called Michigan Tech, emphasizes education in engineering, forestry, the sciences, business, communications, and technology.
