Old Dominion University is a public institution of higher learning in Norfolk, Virginia. The school was founded in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. It severed ties with William and Mary in 1962 and took the name Old Dominion College from a nickname for the state of Virginia. The college became a university in 1969. In addition to the Norfolk campus, Old Dominion has a campus at Virginia Beach; a campus called the Peninsula Center in Hampton; and a Tri-Cities campus serving Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Suffolk.
The university is known for its strong basketball program. Its men’s teams, called the Monarchs, and its women’s teams, called the Lady Monarchs, compete in the Colonial Athletic Association.
