Rochester, University of

Rochester, University of, is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Rochester, New York. It was established in 1850 as a Baptist-sponsored men’s college. The university began to admit women in 1900.

The University of Rochester is known as a leading institution of scientific research. Rochester alumni include Nobel Prize-winning scientists Steven Chu, D. Carleton Gajdusek, Arthur Kornberg, and Vincent du Vigneaud and physician and sex education pioneer Mary S. Calderone.

The university includes the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and the Eastman School of Music (see Eastman School of Music), along with schools of medicine and dentistry, nursing, business administration, and education and human development. The University of Rochester’s athletic teams are called the Yellowjackets.
