Saint John’s University

Saint John’s University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in New York City. It was established as St. John’s College in 1870 by the Vincentian Community, a Roman Catholic religious order of men. The college became St. John’s University in 1933, and today it is one of the largest Catholic universities in the United States. It admits both men and women.

The university’s main campus is in Jamaica, a region of the borough of Queens, in New York City. The school has two other New York City campuses in lower Manhattan and on Staten Island, and another campus on eastern Long Island. St. John’s University also maintains a campus in Rome, Italy, for graduate study in international relations. Notable alumni include political leaders Charles Rangel and Hugh Carey.

St. John’s has a strong sports program and is particularly well known for its men’s basketball teams. The university’s athletic teams are called the Red Storm.
