Art Institute of Chicago, School of the

Art Institute of Chicago, School of the, is an independent school of art and design in Chicago. It is part of the Art Institute of Chicago, and it occupies a portion of the museum, as well as several other Chicago buildings. A small group of artists founded the institute and school in 1866 as the Chicago Academy of Design. The academy was renamed the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1879 and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1882.

The school provides instruction in many facets of the arts, including art administration; art and technology; art education; art history, theory, and criticism; ceramics; fashion design; filmmaking; interior architecture; painting and drawing; performance; photography; printmaking; sculpture; sound; video; and writing. The school grants bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Such well-known artists as sculptors Richard Lippold and Claes Oldenburg; painters Roger Brown, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Mark Tobey; and fashion designer Halston have studied at the School of the Art Institute.
