Southern Mississippi, University of

Southern Mississippi, University of, is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The university was established in 1910 as a teacher-training college called Mississippi Normal College. In 1924, the state of Mississippi changed the college’s name to Mississippi Southern College. It adopted its present name in 1962.

In addition to its main campus in Hattiesburg, the university operates the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach. Regional academic centers include the Jackson County Center in Gautier and the Keesler Center on the Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. The John C. Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis is home to the Center for Ocean Atmospheric Hydrograph Modeling and the Center for Marine Science.

Well-known graduates of the university include football player Brett Favre and entertainer Jimmy Buffet. The university’s athletic teams are called the Golden Eagles.
