Syracuse University

Syracuse University is a private, coeducational, independent institution of higher learning in Syracuse, New York. It was established in 1870 by the Methodist Episcopal Church but has had no ties to any religious denomination since 1920. It has always been open to both men and women.

The university was the first in the United States to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. It also established the first schools of journalism and information studies in the United States.

Well-known Syracuse alumni include writers Joyce Carol Oates and William Safire; astronauts F. Story Musgrave and Eileen Collins; television personality Dick Clark; football player Jim Brown; and broadcast journalists Bob Costas, Ted Koppel and Steve Kroft.

Syracuse athletic teams are called the Orange. Orange has been the university’s official color since 1890.
