Wake Forest University

Wake Forest University is a private institution of higher education in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina founded the school as a liberal arts college for men in 1834 in Wake Forest, North Carolina. It was originally called Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute but changed its name to Wake Forest College in 1838. It added a law school in 1894 and a medical school in 1902.

In 1941, the medical school moved to Winston-Salem, and the rest of the college followed in 1956. Wake Forest began to admit women in 1942. It became a university in 1967. Since 1986, Wake Forest has been self-governing, though it maintains an affiliation with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.

Wake Forest’s athletic teams are nicknamed the Demon Deacons. Well-known alumni include poet A. R. Ammons, basketball player Tim Duncan, and golfer Arnold Palmer.
