Adams, Perseus (1933-…), a South African poet, produces verse that was largely inspired by nature and the beauty of South Africa’s landscape. His first collection, The Land at My Door (1965), uses a free but musical verse structure to express his feelings about the South African countryside. Adams’s poetry is not openly political but does draw lessons from its subject matter. The Land at My Door was followed in 1968 by the collection Young Lovers. A tighter, more disciplined poetry, with shorter lines and a less musical verse rhythm, emerged in Adams’s 1975 collection Grass for the Unicorn.
Peter Robert Charles Adams was born on March 11, 1933, in Cape Town. He adopted the pen name Perseus Adams.
