Argyll and Bute (pop. 85,970) is a council area in western Scotland. The area has many historic sites, including prehistoric forts, Bronze Age tombs, standing stone circles, and ancient monasteries. Its rugged landscapes and extensive coastline attract many tourists. About a fourth of the population live on islands, principally Bute, Islay, and Mull. Important towns include Campbelltown, Dunoon, Lochgilphead, Oban, and Rothesay. Most employment is in service industries, particularly tourism. Other important economic activities include agriculture, forestry, fishing, fish farming, and the production of malt whiskey.
