Australian Academy of the Humanities is an organization that seeks to promote the study of history, language, philosophy, the arts, and other subjects. Its functions include helping scholars from other countries visit Australia and helping Australians visit other countries for consultation, teaching, and research. The council has conducted surveys on the humanities and on language teaching in Australia. It also arranges lectures and seminars on topics of general academic interest and maintains contact with international bodies that have interests similar to its own. The academy was founded in 1957 as the Australian Humanities Research Council. In 1969, a royal charter changed the council’s name to the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
