Barker, Collet (1786-1831), a British Army captain, became an explorer in Australia. In 1828, the Colonial Office sent Barker to Raffles Bay, at the extreme north of what is now the Northern Territory, to take command of a new settlement. In 1831, Barker explored Gulf St. Vincent, in South Australia, in his search for the mouth of the Murray River. He climbed Mount Lofty, then led his expedition overland from Cape Jervis to Lake Alexandrina. While exploring the lake on April 30, he disappeared. Historians believe Aboriginal people killed him. Barker was born in January 1786.
