Barrington, George (1755-1804), was an emancipist (pardoned convict) in Australia, who gained the favor of Governor John Hunter of New South Wales and became superintendent of convicts at Parramatta and, later, chief constable. Barrington falsely claimed to have written A Voyage to Botany Bay. He was born on May 14, 1755, near Dublin, Ireland. His real name may have been George Waldron. He went to London, where he became a gentleman of fashion and employed pickpockets. In 1790, he was sentenced to transportation (deportation) for stealing a watch. He died on Dec. 27, 1804.
