Beattie, Sir David (1924-2001), a New Zealand lawyer, was governor general of New Zealand from 1980 to 1985. David Stuart Beattie was born in Sydney, Australia, on Feb. 29, 1924. He was educated at the University of Auckland, on the North Island of New Zealand. He became a queen’s counsel, a barrister appointed counsel to the Crown, in 1965. He was a judge of the Supreme Court (now called the High Court) from 1969 to 1980. He was knighted in 1980. He died on Feb. 4, 2001, in Upper Hutt.
