Beechworth (pop. 3,291) is a town in the center of a farming and fruit-growing region in northeastern Victoria, Australia. Beechworth grew after the gold rush to the May Day Hills in 1852. The Australian Council of National Trusts has classified more than 30 of the buildings in the town as worth preservation. The Burke Museum contains exhibits of gold diggers, the Chinese community, and the Australian outlaws called the Kelly gang. After the gang’s leader Ned Kelly was captured at Glenrowan, he was sent for trial at Beechworth, but the Crown later had the case moved to Melbourne.
