Boulton, Matthew (1728-1809), a British engineer, together with James Watt, founded the engineering firm of Boulton and Watt. When Watt invented his improved steam engine, Boulton supported him and helped him to produce it (see Watt, James ). Boulton was a technologist and industrial organizer. He spent his own money to help Watt improve and patent designs for steam engines. Boulton was born on Sept. 3, 1728, in Birmingham, England. He died on Aug. 17, 1809.
