Brookeborough, Lord (1888-1973), was prime minister of Northern Ireland from 1943 to 1963. Basil Stanlake Brooke was born on June 9, 1888, in Colebrooke, in what is now the Fermanagh region of Northern Ireland. He was educated at Winchester College and Sandhurst, England. He became a senator in the first Northern Ireland Parliament in 1921. In 1929, he was elected as a member of the Unionist Party to the Northern Ireland House of Commons. In 1933, Brooke was appointed minister of agriculture. He became minister of commerce in 1941. He received a peerage in 1952 and became known as Lord Brookeborough. He died on Aug. 19, 1973.
