Chesterfield

Chesterfield (pop. 103,569) is a local government area in Derbyshire, England. It was once a center of the coal, iron, and steel industries. Chesterfield town is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the city of Sheffield. The town’s Church of St. Mary and All Saints, built in the 1200’s and 1300’s, has an unusual twisted spire. Chesterfield is known for its large open air market and the “Shambles,” a collection of narrow medieval streets in the town center. The inventor George Stephenson is buried in Trinity Church.
