Cleveland was a small administrative county in northeastern England. The county was abolished in 1996 and replaced by four unitary authorities with all local government powers within their borders. These are Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, and Stockton-on-Tees. The county of Cleveland was created in 1974. It replaced the former county boroughs of Hartlepool and Teesside and took in part of southeastern Durham and part of northern Yorkshire.
