Dean, Dixie

Dean, Dixie (1907-1980), was one of the best center-forwards in English soccer. He played for Everton from 1925 to 1937. Dean also played for the Tranmere Rovers (1923-1925) and Notts County (1938-1939). He was particularly noted for his accuracy in heading. Dean scored 60 goals in 39 matches during the 1927-1928 season, breaking the Football League scoring record. He scored a total of 379 goals for his clubs. For his career in the Football League, Football Association (FA) Cup, and other first-class matches, Dean scored 473 goals in 502 games. William Ralph Dean was born on Jan. 22, 1907, in Birkenhead, northwest England. He died on March 1, 1980, while watching Everton play Liverpool.
