Derry was the name of a district council area—a kind of local government area—in Northern Ireland from 1973 to 2015. In 2015, the Derry and Strabane districts were combined to form the Derry City and Strabane local government district. The headquarters of the combined district are in the city of Londonderry, a seaport and one of the largest cities of Northern Ireland. Londonderry is also known as Derry/Londonderry.
The city of Derry/Londonderry began on a hill at a bend in the River Foyle. The name Derry comes from the Irish name Doire, meaning oak grove. During the plantation (British Protestant settlement) of the Ulster region, the city was turned over to the corporation of the city of London. In 1613, it was given the name Londonderry.
