Djukanovic, Milo (1962-…), served as president of Montenegro from 1998 to 2002 and from 2018 to 2023. Djukanovic (also spelled Đukanović) also served as Montenegro’s prime minister from 1991 to 1998, 2003 to 2006, 2008 to 2010, and 2012 to 2016.
For many years, Montenegro was a republic of Yugoslavia. Djukanovic supported making Montenegro an independent country. After Yugoslavia broke up in the 1990’s, Montenegro and Serbia formed a new Yugoslavia. The country changed its name to Serbia and Montenegro in 2003.
In May 2006, Montenegro held a referendum on independence. About 55 percent of voters called for Montenegro to separate from Serbia and become an independent country. Shortly after the referendum, Montenegro declared its independence.
Djukanovic was born on Feb. 15, 1962. In 1979, he joined the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (later renamed the Democratic Party of Socialists). He was a member of the organization’s Central Committee from 1986 to 1989.
