Douglas of Kirtleside, Lord (1893-1969), William Sholto Douglas, one of the United Kingdom’s air commanders during World War II (1939-1945), was chairman of British European Airways (now British Airways) from 1949 until 1964. Douglas was born in Oxford, England, on Dec. 23, 1893. During World War I (1914-1918), he commanded a fighter squadron. During World War II, he held successively the positions of assistant chief of air staff, chief of fighter command, chief of Middle East command, and chief of coastal command. He was made a baron in 1948. He died on Oct. 29, 1969.
