Exeter contains remains of the Roman town Isca Dumnoniorum, built on the site of an earlier Celtic settlement. During the Middle Ages, Exeter was a walled city. Parts of the walls still stand. The ruins of Rougemont Castle, built by William the Conqueror in the 1000’s, and Exeter’s Norman cathedral, most of which dates from 1280 to 1394, also stand in Exeter. Other old buildings include the church of St. Mary Steps.
