Famechon, Johnny

Famechon, Johnny (1945-2022), won the Australian featherweight boxing title in 1964, and the World Boxing Council world featherweight title in 1969, when he outpointed (scored more points than) the Cuban fighter Jose Legra in London, England.

Famechon was born on March 28, 1945, in Paris, France. He immigrated to Australia with his family at the age of 5. He began his boxing career under the Australian trainer and manager Ambrose Palmer in 1961. During Famechon’s professional career, he won 56 fights and lost 5, with 6 draws. He retired in 1970, after losing his featherweight title to the Mexican boxer Vicente Saldiver. In 2022, Famechon was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to boxing. The Order of Australia is Australia’s highest award for service to the country or to humanity. Famechon died on Aug. 4, 2022.
