Fowler, Sir Norman

Fowler, Sir Norman (1938-…), was a Conservative Party member of the United Kingdom’s House of Commons from 1970 to 2001. He was a member of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet from 1981 to 1990. Fowler served as secretary of state for transport during 1981, as secretary of social services from 1981 to 1987, and as secretary of state for employment from 1987 to 1990. He served as chairman of the Conservative Party from 1992 to 1994.

Peter Norman Fowler was born in Chelmsford, Essex, on Feb. 2, 1938. He was educated at King Edward VI School, Chelmsford, and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He worked as a journalist with The Times from 1964 until 1970. He was knighted in 1990 and named a baron in 2001.
