Fraser of the North Cape, Lord

Fraser of the North Cape, Lord (1888-1981), Bruce Austin Fraser, commanded British fleets in World War II (1939-1945). As comptroller (controller) of the Navy from 1939 to 1942, he played an important part in building the strength of the Navy early in the war. As commander in chief of the home fleet in 1943 and 1944, he was responsible for sinking the German battle cruiser Scharnhorst. Fraser later commanded the eastern and Pacific fleets. He was made a baron in 1946, He was born in London on Feb. 5, 1888, and was educated at Bradfield College, Berkshire, England. He died on Feb. 12, 1981.
