Garcia, Carlos Polestico (1896-1971), was the fourth president of the Philippines. He served from 1957 to 1961.

Carlos Polestico Garcia was born on Nov. 4, 1896, in Talibon, Bohol, in the Philippines. After graduating from the Philippine Law School in 1923, Garcia entered politics, serving as a congressman from 1925 to 1931. He was governor of the province of Bohol from 1931 to 1940, and senator from 1941 to 1953. Garcia was active in the Philippine resistance movement during the Japanese occupation in World War II (1939-1945). He was elected vice president in 1953 as a member of the Nacionalista Party. He was also minister of foreign affairs from 1953 to 1957. Garcia became president in March 1957 following the death of President Ramon Magsaysay. He was elected in his own right later that year. Garcia died on June 14, 1971.
