Grahame-White, Claude (1879-1959), was a British aviation pioneer and aeronautical engineer. He was the first to be granted a British certificate of proficiency in aviation and ran the first British flying school. In 1910, he formed a company to build aircraft. This company promoted the London Aerodrome, in Hendon, Middlesex. Grahame-White wrote several books on aviation. He was also an enthusiastic motorist, and he owned one of the first gasoline-engine automobiles in the United Kingdom.
Grahame-White was born on Aug. 31, 1879, in Bursledon, Hampshire, England. He was educated at Bedford Grammar School. He died on Aug. 19, 1959.
