Harris, Reg

Harris, Reg (1920-1992), became the first Englishman to win the world professional sprint cycling championship. Harris became a professional cyclist in 1949 and won the world professional sprint championship in 1949, 1950, 1951, and 1954. He retired in 1957 but came out of retirement in 1974 to win the British professional sprint championship. He retired again in 1975.

Harris was born on March 31, 1920, in Bury, near Manchester. In the mid-1940’s, he was the national amateur sprint cycling champion, and in 1947 he won the world amateur championship. He represented the United Kingdom in the 1948 Olympic Games in London and won two silver medals. Harris died on June 22, 1992.
