Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay is a region on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The province is the North Island’s chief sheep-farming area. In addition, Hawke’s Bay and the Northland district make up the island’s chief fruit-growing area. Market gardens in Hawke’s Bay produce vegetables for canning factories in Hastings, the province’s second largest city. Hawke’s Bay is named after Hawke Bay, which forms 200 miles (320 kilometers) of the province’s coastline. The British navigator James Cook named Hawke Bay in honor of the man who was then first lord of the Admiralty in the United Kingdom.
