Healey, Denis (1917-2015), was a leading Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was deputy leader of the Labour Party from 1980 to 1983. He had previously served in Labour governments as defense secretary from 1964 to 1970 and as chancellor of the exchequer, the United Kingdom’s chief financial officer, from 1974 to 1979.
Denis Winston Healey was born on Aug. 30, 1917, in Eltham, Kent. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and at Balliol College, Oxford. From 1945 to 1952, he was secretary of the Labour Party’s international department. Healey served as member of Parliament for South East Leeds from 1952 to 1955 and for Leeds East from 1955 to 1992. In 1992, he retired from the House of Commons. That same year, Healey was made a life peer, an honor which gave him the title of Lord and a seat in the House of Lords. Healey died on Oct. 3, 2015.
