Kentigern, Saint (?-about A.D. 612), was an early Christian missionary in Scotland and bishop of Glasgow. Little is known about his life. Kentigern, also called Mungo, was the son of a British princess, according to one ancient source. He became a missionary and bishop among the Britons (Welsh) of Strathclyde. But Kentigern suffered persecution at their hands, and so he fled to Cumberland and Wales. He is believed to have founded a monastery at St. Asaph, now in Clwyd, Wales. Kentigern later returned to Scotland. He is Glasgow’s patron saint and is thought to be buried in Glasgow Cathedral. His feast day is January 13.
