Lord lieutenant is the principal officer of a county in the United Kingdom. The monarch appoints lord lieutenants on the advise of the prime minister to act as the monarch’s representative and to manage the monarch’s civic affairs. The lord lieutenant can appoint deputy lieutenants, who must have served for 10 years in the armed services, or have given outstanding service to their county. King Henry VIII created the post of lord lieutenant. A lord lieutenant was then responsible for his county’s military manpower. The lord lieutenant commanded the militia, yeomanry, and volunteers, and appointed their officers.
