Lutine Bell is the bell that hangs in the Underwriting Room at Lloyd’s, an insurance organization in London. The bell is rung to call the attention of members when an important announcement is to be made. One stroke means that bad news is to follow, and two strokes mean good news. Originally, the news was generally of an overdue vessel. The bell comes from H.M.S. Lutine, a 32-gun ship wrecked off the Dutch coast in 1799. It carried a large amount of money and bullion insured at Lloyd’s. The bell was later salvaged.
