Malcolm, George John (1917-1997), was a British harpsichordist, conductor, composer, and pianist. He made noted recordings of compositions by the German composers Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. His interpretations of harpsichord music by composers of the 1600’s and 1700’s are remarkable for their sensitive understanding. As a pianist, Malcolm primarily played chamber music. He conducted the major symphony orchestras in London as well as other British and European orchestras.
Malcolm was born on Feb. 28, 1917, in London. He studied at the Royal College of Music and at Oxford University. He was master of the music at Westminster Cathedral from 1947 to 1959. He composed a mass (1959) for the cathedral. Malcolm died on July 17, 1997.
