May, Peter

May, Peter (1929-1994), a Surrey and England cricketer, captained the English team in nine series of Test matches between 1955 and 1961.

May, a fine stroke player, scored 2,000 Test match runs by the time he had played in 29 Test matches. He played cricket and soccer for Cambridge University teams in the early 1950’s. In his first Test, in 1951, he scored 138. In 1953, he became an insurance broker at Lloyds of London. He retired from cricket in 1963 but served as president of the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1981 and 1982. Peter Barker Howard May was born on Dec. 31, 1929, in Reading, Berkshire. He died on Dec. 27, 1994.
