Michell, Keith

Michell, Keith (1926-2015), an Australian-born actor, won critical acclaim for his portrayal of King Henry VIII in the British television series The Six Wives of Henry VIII in 1970. Michell became a leading stage actor, performing with the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (now the Royal Shakespeare Company) in England from 1952 to 1956. He also performed in many musical comedies, making his London stage debut in 1951 in the musical And So to Bed. He was a star of the hit musical Irma la Douce (1958). He was artistic director of the Chichester Festival from 1974 to 1977. Michell also appeared in several motion pictures.

Keith Joseph Michell was born on Dec. 1, 1926, in Adelaide, Australia, and educated at Port Pirie High School and Adelaide Teachers College. He made his first stage appearance in Adelaide in 1947. Michell was also a silk screen and lithograph artist. He died on Nov. 20, 2015.
