Mint

Mint is a historic Australian building on Macquarie Street in Sydney. The original structure was completed in 1816 as a store and as housing for junior surgeons at what was known as Rum Hospital. The hospital acquired this nickname because Governor Lachlan Macquarie paid its builders by giving them a license to import rum into the colony. Soon after the discovery of gold in New South Wales in 1851, the British government decided to establish a branch of the Royal Mint at this location. The Mint closed in 1926. Today, the building houses a small museum display about the history of the site, a library and research collection, and offices of the Historic Houses Trust. See also Royal Australian Mint .
