Moncrieff, Gladys (1892-1976), was one of Australia’s greatest musical comedy stars. She was known affectionately as “Australia’s Queen of Song” and “Our Glad.” Moncrieff appeared in 58 musicals. Her best-known role was Teresa in The Maid of the Mountains (1921)—a part she performed about 3,000 times, making her final performance in 1952.
Moncrieff was born on April 13, 1892, in Bundaberg, Queensland. Her first important role was in H.M.S. Pinafore in 1914. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, she became one of Australia’s most popular entertainers. She wrote an autobiography, My Life in Song (1971). Moncrieff died on Feb. 9, 1976.
