Monklands is a local government district in central Scotland. It includes Airdrie and Coatbridge. Airdrie is an industrial town and a residential area for people working in nearby Glasgow. Coatbridge has iron and steel industries. Monklands was once a coal-mining area. It gets its name from lands previously owned by a Cistercian Abbey in nearby Newbattle.
