Moore, Gerald (1899-1987), was a British pianist who achieved fame through his brilliant skill as an accompanist. His accompaniment of singers and violinists won particular admiration throughout the world. His sensitive musicianship raised the art of accompanying performers to a new level of prestige.
Moore was born on July 30, 1899, in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. He wrote about the art of the accompanist in The Unashamed Accompanist (1943) and Singer and Accompanist (1953). His autobiography appears in two volumes: Am I Too Loud? (1962) and Farewell Recital (1978). He also wrote Furthermore: Interlude in an Accompanist’s Life (1983). Moore died on March 13, 1987.
