Murray, Lord (1922-2004), usually called Len Murray, was general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) from 1973 until 1984. The TUC is a national organization of labor unions in the United Kingdom. He had been assistant general secretary since 1969.
Lionel Murray was born in Hadley, Shropshire, on Aug. 2, 1922. He was educated at Wellington Grammar School, the University of London, and New College, Oxford. He studied politics and economics. In 1947, he joined the TUC to work in its economic department. Murray led the department from 1954 to 1960. He was created a life peer in 1985, as Baron Murray of Epping Forest. He died on May 20, 2004.
