Neville, John

Neville, John (1925-2011), was a British actor and director. He became known for his performances in plays by William Shakespeare. Neville was a member of the Bristol Old Vic Company from 1950 to 1953. From 1953 to 1961, he was a member of the Old Vic Company in London, playing many leading roles, including Richard II, Hamlet, and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. In 1960, he directed Henry V at the Old Vic Theatre. From 1963 until 1968, he was director of the Nottingham Playhouse. In 1973, Neville left the United Kingdom to work in Canada. He was director of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta, from 1973 to 1978 and artistic director of the Neptune Theatre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from 1978 to 1983. He was an artistic director at the Stratford Festival in Ontario from 1985 to 1989.

Neville was born on May 2, 1925, in Willesden, London. He studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He appeared on British television and in a number of motion pictures, most notably as the title character in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). He died on Nov. 19, 2011.
