Podzol is a type of soil that is commonly found in areas south of the tundra regions in the Northern Hemisphere and also along coastal areas and cooler regions of Australia and New Zealand. It is an ashy gray soil covered by a layer of organic topsoil. Its name comes from the Russian words meaning ashes underneath.
